“But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.” — Hebrews 1:2 (NIV84)
The universe is HUGE. It’s way bigger than we can visualize. To even try and imagine how big it is, place a penny in front of you. If our sun was the size of that penny, the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, would be 350 miles away. For us in Salt Lake City, that would take us all the way to Las Vegas (as the crow flies)!
Many experts estimate that the observable universe appears to be about 13.8 billion light years across. But, in 2011, the MIT Review reported that the universe is at least 250 times larger than the observable universe, or at least seven trillion light-years across! I know – you can’t even comprehend that, can you? Additionally, scientists conservatively estimate that there are so many stars in the known universe that every man, woman, and child on our planet could each own 133 trillion of them! Wow!
Jesus made it all.
Not only is Jesus the Savior and heir of all things — He is the Creator of everything! Every grain of sand and every glorious galaxy. Through Jesus, the uncountable number of stars were born and every individual human being was formed.
As I contemplate the greatness, majesty, and power of our God, it humbles me to no end. God is not like us, though we are created in His image (Genesis 1:27). He is outside of His creation, yet chooses to be very close to us (Psalm 138:6). In reverence and fear, I should fall on my knees and worship this God. He alone is worthy of all my worship, praise, and honor. Jesus is the creator of everything (including me). That means He alone deserves my absolute and unquestioned obedience and affections today.
Jesus made the universe… what have you made today?
In awe of our Creator,
Bill
