Lately, I have had a real boost in my quiet times and it’s because I have been using SOAP! No, not the soap you use to wash with. Rather, a devotional plan. Let me explain.
S. – Scripture
O. – Observation
A. – Application
P. – Prayer
I am not sure who thought up this acronym originally, but I am certain I have heard Bill Young use it before (thanks, Bill).
Here are a few examples out of my journal — showing you how this has worked in my quiet times this past week.
Scripture: “A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else.” Psalm 84:10
Observation: The psalmist is declaring to God the there is no place better in this world than to be near God. One day with God brings more joy than a thousand days anywhere else.
Application: Steele, do you believe this? Where are you finding the most rest? Is there anything that you think brings more joy than Jesus?
Prayer: “Lord, would you help my Joy to be in YOU entirely? Lord, would you help my refreshment to come from You?”
Here is another example:
Scripture: “O Lord, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.” Psalm 88:1
Observation: This brother was desperate for God. He called out to God both day and night. He was hungry for God. He craved God.
Application: Today, Steele, be hungry for God. Crave God. Search God out in the daytime, and at night.
Prayer: “Lord, would you place in me a deep desire for you? Will you help me crave you both day and night? Will you give me an opportunity to seek you tonight?”
This simple practice has been a real shot in the arm for me. I remember the verses more easily and am applying them to my life. Maybe challenge yourself to try it this week?
A little SOAP goes a long way,
Steele
