Well, it’s that time of year and tomorrow we’ll celebrate Christmas! We’ll celebrate in our own ways and for me, it’ll be my 35th Christmas. Each one of them has been different. Some have been memorable and detailed in my mind, some have blended together and some of them I don’t remember
at all.
No matter how you celebrate (or how many you’ve celebrated), each Christmas is a reminder to us that Jesus came to this world and dwelt among us. It’s an opportunity for us to remember that He came to save us.
It’s a unique time of year because there are activities, traditions and events that specifically happen around Christmastime. There is music we only listen to in December. We have special church services we attend and packages we send to people near and far. There are opportunities to share the Gospel with people simply by explaining what a familiar Christmas song is truly all about. We invite people to church (and into our homes) so they can hear the Gospel. All this to celebrate one simple thing — Jesus came to this earth.
Christmas should also remind us that Jesus is coming back! His return is closer than ever. There will be a day when we (as Christians), will be invited to celebrate what Jesus did for us WITH HIM! Just like the multitude of angels sang at Jesus’ birth, we read in Revelation 19 that a great multitude will celebrate His marriage to His Church. John explains it like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“’Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure’ – for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.” — Revelation 19:6-8
Another kind of Christmas is coming and “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” (v.9) Until then, let’s keep remembering and celebrating, in our own ways and with our own traditions, what Jesus has already done for us.
Merry Christmas!
Billy
