“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!” — Psalm 139:7-8
Years ago, I worked in an underground mine. When we were done with the job each day, my co-workers took the buggy (side by side) up to the surface and unloaded some of our tools — they needed to make room for me. So, for about half an hour, I was alone (with nearly a mile of earth above me).
One particular night, I was soaked from the unending flow of water that came from the pinholes in the rocks above me. I crawled under a tarp (which was keeping a piece of our electrical equipment dry). I laid down on the warm, dry, humming electrical equipment; then I turned off my cap lamp and thought about where I was.
It was so dark when I turned off my lamp that I wondered if it would be possible to accidentally fall asleep with my eyes open?! I started thinking about Bible verses that had to do with darkness. This one came to mind, “even the darkness is not dark to you. The night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.” (Psalm 139:12). After thinking about that verse, I took heart. I was reminded that no matter how dark it was, or how deep into the earth I was, God promised that He was with me. This promise applies to all of His people.
God is with you!
Christian, when you feel the darkness of this world closing in around you, or the weight of circumstances (that are out of your control) looming above you and waiting to crush you, remember, God is with you! Not only is He with you, He loves you. As the Apostle Paul wrote:
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39).
Resting in His omnipresence and love,
