Lately, I have had a real boost in my quiet times and it’s because I have been using S.O.A.P. Not the soap you use to wash with, however. It’s a Bible study plan — let me explain.
S. – Scripture
O. – Observation
A. – Application
P. – Prayer
I’m not sure who originally thought of this acronym, but I have certainly heard Pastor Bill use it before (thanks, Bill)!
Here are a few examples from my quiet time journal:
Scripture: “A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else.” (Psalm 84:10)
Observation: The psalmist is declaring to God that there is no place better in this world than to be near God. One day with God brings more joy than a thousand days anywhere else.
Application: Steele, do you believe this? Where are you finding the most rest? Is there anything that you think brings more joy than Jesus?
Prayer: “Lord, would you help my joy to be in YOU entirely? Would you help my refreshment to come from You?”
Another Example:
Scripture: “O Lord, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.” (Psalm 88:1)
Observation: This brother was desperate for God. He called out to God both day and night. He was hungry for God. He craved God.
Application: Today, Steele, be hungry for God. Crave Him. Search God out both in the daytime and night-time.
Prayer: “Lord, would you place in me a deep desire for you? Will you help me crave you both day and night? Will you give me an opportunity to seek you tonight?”
This simple practice has been a shot in the arm for me. As a result, I remember the scripture more easily and am able to apply it to my life. Maybe challenge yourself to try it this week?
A little S.O.A.P. goes a long way,
