God’s Truth

God's Truth – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "Don’t settle for a soothing lie that may bring God’s judgment into your life. In other words, accepting God’s Truth, even if it is painful,"

We need God’s truth.

“We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.” — Daniel 9:6

Last week, while shopping, I noticed the clerk wore a shirt that had “Love is Love” printed on it. I have seen that saying everywhere. If time had allowed, I might have respectfully asked, “What do you mean by love is love?” However, there was a long line of customers waiting to check out and it wasn’t the right time. I can guess, though, he would have said something about the “freedom to love who you want to love, including sexually.”

Even though it’s popular, this saying breaks down both logically and biblically. First, I could have mentioned a few groups of people he would immediately reject as having the freedom to love who they wanted to love.

We Have His Word

Second, and more importantly, we have a standard to compare this popular saying to — the Word of God. In the above passage, Daniel was repenting for the Israelite’s sins because they had ignored God’s Word through the prophets.

His Word is for teaching humanity, but many have rejected it. Sometimes, His Truth is too unpopular to hear. Indeed, God has a number of clear thoughts on who we should love (including sexually): Exodus 20:14, Proverbs 5-7, Matthew 5:27-30, 1 Corinthians 6:9-20, Galatians 5:19-21, Hebrews 13:4

Certainly, God’s Truth can hurt. We prefer to hear words that sooth, even if they are false. Don’t settle for a soothing lie that may bring God’s judgment into your life. In other words, accepting God’s Truth, even if it is painful, will only help us in the long run!

Looking to the source of Truth,

Josh
