There are plenty of things to follow these days. A few that come to mind are: news, sports, popular trends, social media and music. Without a doubt, the list is endless. As I’ve thought about it, I’ve realized something. When I choose to follow Jesus (ahead of all the other things vying for my attention) I find a clarity not found anywhere else. It reminds me of these verses:
“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”— Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT)
The Choice is Yours
Along with you, I want my faith to grow strong in the Truth I’ve been taught. According to the verse above, there is a simple connecting component — the word “must.” The verse states we “must” continue to follow Him. I don’t see any wiggle room there. Put very simply, the answer to the question of how to grow my faith is to follow Jesus. The Lord has made it so simple, yet we sometimes find ourselves still missing Him and following the shiny lures of this world. We go after the artificial objects with the empty promise of pleasure.
God has given us an incredible abundance of things to enjoy in this world; I think it pleases Him when we do so. But, I also think the best of what God has for us is truly available only when we, “let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him.” Or, in other words, when we follow Him. Following Him does not restrict what we get to enjoy. People may think that it does. However, following Him actually enhances everything God created for us. Following Jesus is more than a proclamation of faith. It’s a love relationship that goes into eternity.
I love this hymn, and wanted to share it with you. Sing it all day long!
“I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”
I have decided to follow Jesus, x3
No turning back, no turning back.
The world behind me, the cross before me, x3
No turning back, no turning back.
Though none go with me, still I will follow, x3
No turning back, no turning back.
