“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (NIV84)
My mom died a few weeks ago. We didn’t expect it. It happened suddenly.
Without a doubt, death is never easy. Grieving the loss of a loved one is not something we look forward to. Neither would we describe such experiences as “good.” They are really hard. They hurt.
However, as I look back over the past few weeks (amidst all the emotions, challenges and loss), there’s something I know. I can honestly say that God was good, kind and loving in all His ways toward me and my family. Death is not a good thing. Still, God works things out for the good of those who love Him. Even in tragedies.
Ways I’ve Seen His Goodness Bless my Life:
- My mother was a Believer. I had the opportunity to lead her to Christ over 25 years ago. She is with Jesus today.
- My mother is restored. After suffering with late stage Alzheimer’s for close to a decade, she now has her new body and is fully alive in heaven.
- I was able to be with my mom, dad and family in her last few days. I had planned a trip to Iowa (where she lived) weeks before. The perfect timing of it allowed me to take on the role of managing all the details of her final days.
- I comforted my family. By extending my trip, I was able to take point on communication with relatives and simply be with my dad and family.
- I shared the hope of Jesus with those I loved. Death always provides this opportunity.
I could list many more things that God did and how He answered prayers. In all of it, I saw the gentle, loving hand of the Lord.
We’ll all go through many things in life that wouldn’t be considered “good.” But, I can tell you with joyful confidence, that God can (and will) work things out for the good for those who love Him.
Resting in His goodness,
