Is the Word of God something you take delight in?
I’ve recently been thinking quite a bit about the word “delight”. We are currently in a sermon series at church (through Psalm 119) called “Delighting In God’s Word.” I take delight in naps, cats, and iced Americanos. I take great pleasure in the joy of Disneyland with my wife and children. But the thought of delighting in God’s Word strikes a chord that goes much deeper. Of course, I enjoy the goodness of God in the good times. But what about the times when I need the promises of God to minister to me in a more profound way? How can I delight in God’s Word when walking through pain, suffering, and loss?
I’ve discussed these verses with some friends, and we’ve had some great exchanges about what God’s Word is, what God’s Word says, and what God’s Word promises to do.
I want to share three promises you can take delight in today:
God’s Word Promises to Speaks To Us
The Old and New Testaments are the Holy Spirit-driven and inspired Word of God that speaks directly to us.
- 2 Peter 1:20, 2 Timothy 3:16, Psalm 119:105, Proverbs 30:5, John 17:17, 1 Thessalonians 2:13, Hebrews 4:12
During any day, I will undoubtedly hear from the radio DJ, news anchors, and my favorite podcast host — about everything right and wrong in this world. But when I come to God’s Word today, I will hear the voice of the Lord Himself. And everything He says is eternally true.
From His promises and commands to past events and future glories, He has always spoken truth. This means when I come to Scripture, I can be confident that the Lord will be faithful to communicate and instruct me. That is certainly the voice we need to hear every day. Next time you open up your Bible, take a minute to ponder a great truth, “The Creator of the Cosmos wants to speak to me today, and He promises to meet me here in His Word!”
God’s Word Promises to Sustains Us
“Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” — Psalm 119:89
Believers have the assurance and confidence that the Lord does not just speak to us with His Word. He also sustains us through His Word. It’s firmly fixed in the heavens. Anchored in eternity, it isn’t going anywhere! Unquestionably, where God’s Word permanently resides, there is stability.
When we come to the Word, we come to the One who will never collapse and fail! His Word promises to sustain His people from generation to generation (Psalm 119:90). We can confidently know that nothing will ever unhinge us from the goodness and love of God. (Romans 8:39)
God’s Word Promises to Fulfill its Promises to Us
Think about everything Jesus Christ has personally accomplished for us.
- He’s forgiven our sins. (Ephesians 1:7)
- Our separation from God has ended. (Romans 5:10)
- We have a new spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)
- He will take us to our eternal home. (2 Peter 3:13)
These are all promises that God’s Word has proclaimed and accomplished. It happened because the Word of God came into our world to rescue us. When we look at Jesus, we see that “all the promises of God find their Yes in Him.” 2 Corinthians 1:20. There is nothing more delightful in more in all the world.
God’s Word promises to speak to us, sustain us, and fulfill all of its promises for us. May we come to daily delight in it. Let’s profess with the psalmist, “He rescued me because He delighted in me.” — Psalm 18:19
Delightfully yours,
