Let it Snow!

Let it Snow! – A word by Pastor Steve McInroy from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "the most sensible thing possible. In the storms of my life, I need to trust the Lord and say to Him, “let it snow."

I have a love/hate relationship with snow. The lovely song that Frank Sinatra made famous, “Let It Snow,” brings a certain whimsical set of emotions. Yes, the snow is beautiful! Yet, my back is aching, and driving is stressful. When pondering the statement “let it snow,” I can’t help but be reminded of the One (and only One) who controls the snow.

I grew up in Iowa and had a somewhat innate sense of wonder when we got lots of snow. As a young boy, I definitely have memories of a good snowstorm, meaning no school, and I could play with friends. We’d make snow forts and have snowball fights for endless days of adventure. Even now, as an adult living in drought-stricken Utah, I’m thrilled with the thought of the snowmelt from a good storm filling our reservoirs. There is an incredible value that comes with the snow — water.

Yet this morning, I yearn for springtime. I’ve just about had enough snow on my driveway. I am thrilled to drive up into the mountains to observe the breathtaking beauty of the snow; I can watch my friends gleefully ski and snowboard. Yet, at my house, I want warm sunshine.

Go to Jesus

Lately, some things in my life have seemed a bit out of control. Can you relate? I guess I selfishly want things to go my way. I may need to listen to some of Frank Sinatra’s tunes to calm my heart. Or, I could do the most sensible thing possible. In the storms of my life, I need to trust the Lord and say to Him, “let it snow.”

I can’t help but think of the desperate disciples in the boat with Jesus. They so wanted to somehow control what seemed to be out of their control, the weather. Ultimately, they did the necessary thing and pleaded with Jesus, “Lord, save us!”

“The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responded, “Why are you so afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” They asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him.” — Matthew 8:25-27

Always (and I mean always) go to Jesus. Go to Him in good times or bad, in the calm or the out-of-control days of life. Pray to Jesus and prepare to be amazed. God is in control.

Let it snow,

Mac
