The Book of Proverbs (6:16-19) gives us a list of seven things God really hates. It’s undoubtedly a serious call to avoid the stuff that tears down what He values. Verse 19 talks specifically about behaviors that wreck trust and unity. The ESV says, “one who sows discord among brothers,” and the NLT describes “a person who sows discord in a family.” Additionally, the NIV widens it to “a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”
Now, think about that for a second. Causing division and conflict—just by what we say—is labeled as an abomination to God. That’s obviously huge! Why? Because breaking unity certainly goes against His command for us to love one another and live in harmony.
So, why does this matter so much? Jesus summed up the greatest commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind,” and then added, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). To truly love the people around us—friends, family, or our community—we must be honest and brave enough to have real conversations without causing division. Gossiping, spreading lies, or stirring up drama always pulls us away from our call to reflect God’s love.
How Do We Put This Into Action?
For this reason, check your words and behavior this week. Are you creating peace and speaking truth? If someone starts a conversation (about a brother or sister), ask God to help you steer it toward something specifically uplifting. And if you know you’ve caused division, be the one to make it right. You should, of course, shut down talk that isn’t life-giving or that spreads negativity. Remember, real love means thinking about how our actions impact others.
Today, let’s aim to reflect God’s heart by being honest. Let’s also be committed to building each other up.
