Be in Faith, a word by pastor Bill Young from The Rock Church in Draper, Utah. "Fear is the opposite of faith, and God wants us to trust Him. Here are a few reminders to help you courageously face each new day that lies ahead:"

Hello, Church!

It’s obvious we are entering into uncharted territory and many people are confused and fearful of the future. That is understandable. But, let’s make sure we put our trust in God and direct our fears to Jesus. I love what it says in 2 Timothy 1:7, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.” Amen!

Fear is the opposite of faith, and God wants us to trust Him. With that in mind, here are a few reminders to help you courageously face each new day that lies ahead:

  • We don’t need to panic. God is in control. He promises to be with us. (Hebrews 13:5)
  • We will get through this. There is no doubt that (though we may have some challenging weeks ahead) this too, will definitely pass. Make no mistake about it — in a few months, most of this will be behind us.
  • Do what we are told. What is being recommended is precautionary and preventative — and very wise! We advise you to do what the experts and our leaders are suggesting. From distance learning, to live-streaming, to social distancing — all of this will help prevent the spread of the virus and get us through this crisis more quickly and safely.

So, as Christians, how should we act?

First, and foremost, we are to be in faith.

There is obvious wisdom in taking precautions, but we need to not fear. Here are some suggestions and reminders to help us get perspective (based on a devotional from Tom Short’s ministry tomthepreacher.com):

  1. Pray. Pray for grace, wisdom and protection. Don’t neglect or underestimate the power of prayer! Philippians 4:6 (NIV) says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Take time to pray every day.
  2. Rest in the Lord. Let’s consider this crisis as coming from Jesus. Caution and concern are definitely in order; panic is not. Let us be at peace, knowing God will work things out for our good! Romans 8:28 (ESV) says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Don’t be gripped by fear. Instead, choose to rest in the Lord.
  3. Take precautions. We need to be wise. Wash your hands and stay home if you’re sick. If you are at risk — be careful, and follow the suggested guidelines.
  4. Look for the good! Why not take advantage of some extra down time? Maybe spend a little extra time in prayer, in Bible study or reading that book you’ve been meaning to get to. Get some physical rest – maybe even a nap. Consider this time as a Sabbath from the Lord.
  5. Watch out for one another. Care for each other by looking out for the elderly, single moms and needy neighbors. Be wise but helpful. Call your elderly neighbors, and definitely let someone know if you need help. Finally, keep checking The Rock’s Coronavirus Update page for the latest information from our pastors.

Here’s the bottom line: We are Christians, and in times of crisis, our Christianity should shine forth like the sun! Let’s not let this crisis pass without demonstrating to the world Who lives in us!

Standing strong in faith with you,

Bill
