“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” — James 4:13-15
A few weeks ago, many people from our church attended the Faithcamp/DTC Conference in Alamosa, Colorado. It was five days of teachings, worship, fellowship, meals, games, and heat. It was so encouraging. Also, tiring. Thank you for praying for the conference; the Lord indeed blessed it!
The Rock Church led the evening worship, and Brady (our Technology Director) and his team led the sound. Obviously, the worship was a vital part of the conference. Additionally, we met outside on a lawn (under a tent), so the sound system was critical if the 760 people were going to hear anything!
Brady shared the following remarkable story of getting the sound gear to Alamosa:
“Tate, Sarah, and I were about 20 minutes outside Montrose, Colorado, on Highway 50. I was driving Tom’s 5th wheel (loaded with all of the sound equipment and instruments for Faithcamp). I had almost reached the top of a 13% incline when I noticed the truck was starting to run a bit hot. Because of this, I pulled over and shut the engine off to let it cool down. But, as soon as the motor stopped running, the pressure built up in the coolant system, and something broke. The next thing I knew, there was coolant everywhere. The truck was smoking, and the temperature gauge was in the red! I mean, we were stopped dead in our tracks. We seriously wondered how we would complete the remaining four hours of our drive and get all of the equipment to Alamosa.
We waited (and prayed) for an hour and a half. Admittedly, we still couldn’t figure out how we were going to be able to get to Alamosa. Then a man named Rob (who had passed us going down the canyon) decided he needed to turn around and help us. He came back in his truck and at once came up with a solution. He took me back into town to rent a U-Haul, bought us all dinner, and helped unhook the truck from the trailer. Finally, he used his truck to haul the trailer and let us park it at his church. (By the way, Rob runs sound at his church.) I am so thankful for Rob. Simply put, without him, Faithcamp couldn’t have happened.”
Christian, do you realize it was indeed God’s will that the truck would break down on the way to Alamosa? Along with that, it was also God’s will that Rob would drive by, decide to help, and “just happened” to be a sound guy from a local church. On top of that, the breakdown prompted Brady and his team to pray. God’s sovereignty certainly brought along the perfect person to answer their prayers!
Like it says in James, “If the Lord wills…” May we daily, humbly acknowledge God’s sovereignty over our lives and always pray for His guidance and help.
