“Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.” — Psalm 119:35
As people, we look for happiness in a variety of places. Often, we look for happiness in our hobbies, careers, or even our family and friends. Indeed, these things can contribute to joy and happiness for all of us. I, too, find much comfort in many of them.
I love what the Psalmist prayed. Without a doubt, we find happiness in the Lord’s commands. What a wonderful truth and tremendous reminder to us all. Walking in the “path” of God’s commands means naturally living in obedience to His Word and fellowship with Him.
In my home, I often refer to God’s “path” as remaining in “the circle of His blessing.” Imagine drawing a circle and putting everything good inside of it. Additions include family, friends, Church, health, food, and hobbies. Equally important is communion with God and a sense of nearness to Him.
Outside this circle are pain, heartache, and a sense of isolation. Indeed, all good is within the circle of blessing.
Every Good Thing
God’s Word tells us,
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” — James 1:17
Every good thing we have comes from our God. Not only the families we love, but the air we breathe comes from Jesus.
There are blessings when we find our happiness walking along God’s pathway. On top of that, knowing Jesus is the SOURCE of blessing enables us to worship more deeply and with a great deal of gratitude.
Christian, don’t you see? There is never true happiness when we seek it apart from God’s Lordship. There may be good but not deeply rooted contentment, purpose, and authentic happiness. Things will just be things.
However, when we walk along His path (inside the circle of blessing), we enjoy true fellowship with our Father. We know He is always the giver of good things.
This week, do not seek happiness outside of God’s pathway. Instead, find deeper happiness in the true richness, fellowship, and gratitude of walking with Him. He is forever the giver of all good and perfect gifts.
