Look Ahead! — a word by Pastor Tony D'Amico from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "A key lesson from these sports is the importance of looking ahead. It sounds simple, but it’s critical. You have to keep your eyes focused"

I’ve always had a passion for all things boards. From the freedom of skateboarding through city parks to carving fresh powder on snow-capped mountains. Not to mention the rhythm of surfing ocean waves. Without a doubt, it’s a thrill like no other. I love feeling the wind rushing against my face. Strangely, times like this are also when I find myself in deep prayer. Yes, you read that right; I absolutely connect with God profoundly while gliding on a board!

A key lesson from these sports is the importance of looking ahead. It sounds simple, but it’s critical. You have to keep your eyes focused forward to anticipate your next move. You’re likely to fall if you look elsewhere—behind, below, or to the side. Whether it’s catching an edge on a snowboard or slipping off a surfboard, falling is naturally part of the game. Even the best pros take spills. Perfection in riding, just like in life, is forever unattainable.

These experiences on various boards have taught me patience and humility. Along with a deep appreciation for God’s creation. They’ve also mirrored a powerful lesson I recently revisited in the Bible. In Philippians, Paul writes about the journey toward spiritual perfection. Additionally, he acknowledges his imperfections and continuous struggle against sin. He emphasizes the importance of not focusing on our past but on the future. More specifically, a heavenly prize awaits us.

A Heavenly Prize Awaits

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:13-14

Paul’s message resonates deeply with me. Just as a rider gets up after a fall, we also must rise from our setbacks. Our eyes must be on the ultimate prize—eternal fellowship with Jesus. It’s never about dwelling on our failures or the sins that trip us up. Instead, it’s about moving forward with determination and faith. As we navigate the waves and slopes of life, let’s embrace this wisdom.

This week, reflect on Paul’s words. Understand your struggles, work to overcome them, and get right back up if you fall. Don’t focus on what’s behind but instead on what lies ahead. We have the promise of perfect fellowship with Christ. Keep looking forward, always forward.

Keep riding,

Tony
