In this section of verses, Jesus describes himself allegorically as “The Good Shepherd.” This means that Jesus knows our deepest needs better than we know them ourselves. As our Shepherd, Jesus protects us, feeds us and loves us more than life itself.
But, we also recognize that we are the sheep in this story, and sheep are not known for their high achievements! Sheep, by nature, are stupid, utterly helpless (with limited intelligence), and prone to wander. They are in desperate need of a shepherd. Using detailed shepherd imagery, Jesus gives us an amazing look at the heart of our Savior. In fact, we see a picture of a God who loves us enough to lay down His life for us (his sheep).
