The Core: Discipleship, Character and Skill
Discipleship — How to Choose Someone by Pastor Josh Whitney (starts at 0:00) The Biblical mandate to make disciples is clear. The Bible calls all of us to this discipleship work. However, the first question we need to answer is who? We have limited time and energy, so we must focus our discipleship efforts. We don’t have the ability to disciple the entire church. Fortunately for us, the Bible provides clarity on who we should disciple. Discussion Question: “How have you seen God teach you through people who are different than you?” Share an example.
Character — Servant’s Heart by Pastor Billy Johnson (starts at 12:50) As Christians, we are called to be servants of God, and of each other. We each need to take on the attitude of a servant, as Jesus did, and devote ourselves to being humble, loving and obedient. We also need to look forward to the future rewards in our next life, rather than exhausting our time, money and efforts to obtain rewards that will perish in this life. Discussion Question: “When you are called and asked to be on the serving schedule for the month, what is your first reaction? Why do you think that is?”
Skill — Multiplying a Small Group by Pastor Bryan D. Edwards (starts at 28:25) Small Groups are an essential element to what makes The Rock Church flourish and grow. We believe God really blesses the church when we gather in smaller settings for fellowship, prayer, sharing meals and studying God’s Word together. As Small Groups continue to grow bigger in size, it can become increasingly difficult for intentional fellowship and discipleship to occur. That’s why we believe it’s a good thing for Small Groups to begin thinking and planning on how to multiply one Small Group into two groups. Discussion Question: “Do you feel like it’s easier for you to connect and grow in a group that is smaller, or in a group that’s larger?” Explain
From Series: "The Core"
At The Rock Church, part of our Mission Statement is to Build the Believer. We want to find long-lasting ways to do that and believe our newly developed Core Meeting is just that! These times are a monthly, co-ed discipleship meeting with worship, teaching, empowering, envisioning and fellowship — all with the leaders and aspiring leaders of our church.
