  1. Do You Really Believe This?

Do You Really Believe This? — a word by Pastor Billy Johnson from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "We need to always believe the Bible and look at it as a historically accurate book. Indeed, it’s a library of events that really happened!"

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Recently, I was talking with a friend about the story of Jonah. We recounted the story play-by-play. It reminded me how the story of Jonah has undoubtedly become one of the most challenging Bible stories to believe. In 1794 (230 years ago), Thomas Paine, author of “The Age of Reason,” said the book of Jonah was “…A fit story for ridicule if it was written to be believed — or of laughter if it was intended to try what credulity could swallow, for if it could swallow Jonah and the whale it could swallow anything.”

  2. Sharper Than a Double Edge Sword

Sharper Than a Double Edge Sword  — a word by Pastor Tony D'Amico from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "The Bible isn’t just a book, printed and bound to only be placed on a bookshelf. More than that, it’s alive and active. It’s also sharper..."

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been learning about the historical use of a long sword. It takes great precision to design them. The long edge faces away from you, while the short edge is toward you. Additionally, the blade has three sections. First, there is the “Strong” — the section from the crossbar to the “Middle” section. After the “Middle” comes the “Weak” or the top half. Each part has advantages for combat. Swords are both defensive and offensive weapons. All of the parts work together to make it formidable.

The comparison of God’s Word being like a sword (found in Hebrews) certainly came to life for me.

  3. Shield of Faith

Shield of Faith – a word by Pastor Tony D'Amico from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "It’s a shield that deflects the lies, temptations, and fears, as well as the doubts that Satan throws at us."

“In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” — Ephesians 6:16

Paul used this metaphor to represent the Christian’s faith and belief in God. This shield unquestionably extinguishes all (not just some) of the flaming darts the evil one shoots at you.

Just as a physical shield protects a warrior in battle, so, too, the Shield of Faith protects us from the devil’s spiritual attacks. It’s a shield that deflects the lies, temptations, and fears, as well as the doubts that Satan throws at us.

  4. Jesus the Killer

Jesus the Killer – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "the Antichrist is doomed and Jesus is his killer. Imagine, just a word from Jesus will bring the Antichrist’s wicked reign to an end."

“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:8

Have you ever read a verse that stopped you? Made you really think about something in a way you hadn’t before? As our Youth Group read through the New Testament this year, it was good to study the Gospels, Epistles and Revelation. A few months ago, I read the above verse and like I said, it stopped me. The chapter talked about the end times (eschatology); it described the Antichrist and the return of Jesus. But the phrase, “the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth” stopped me.

  5. Jesus Holds Me

Jesus Holds Me – a word from Pastor Steve McInroy from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "We can easily feel defeated and helpless when we’re sick. God knows this and holds us close, reminding us, “don’t be afraid..."

Without a doubt, I am convinced that Jesus holds me. This truth permeates the Bible (from Genesis to Revelation). Here’s a snippet of verses:

    • “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” — Isaiah 41:10
    • “Though they stumble, they never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” — Psalm 37:24
    • “He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” — Colossians 1:17

I love, love, love these verses!
