  1. The Disgrace of Pride

I am so proud. I don’t want to be. Sometimes I don’t mean to be. But, if I’m honest with my heart, I am so proud. More often than not, I feel like I’m right or I’m entitled to something I desire. Many times, I find myself drifting into thoughts like, “If it were up to me I would….”

Have you ever slowed down enough to examine your own heart and the areas of pride you might be holding onto? Ask yourself and the Holy Spirit, “Where in my life is there un-checked pride?” Ask your closest friends, family or spouse, “Do you sense pride in me, and if so, where?”

  2. Fearless

“But all who listen to me will live in peace untroubled by fear of harm.” — Proverbs 1:33

There is a way to live that leads to harm, fear and restlessness. Most of the time this is a result of listening to ourselves, lies or negative influences. When we find ourselves with a pit in our stomachs and a tinge of fear rattling our emotions, we should ask ourselves, “Who am I listening to?”

The GREAT news, however, is what the Word of God gives us in the book of Proverbs. Those who listen to Jesus, His wisdom and The Holy Spirit, live in PEACE without FEAR!

Joyful Noise, a word by Pastor Steele Croswhite of The Rock Church, a non-denominational christian church, in Salt Lake City Draper Utah

“Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” — Psalm 100:1-2 (ESV)

I recently had the privilege of helping lead three worship services at our church. I was reminded this morning, while reading my Bible, that singing and entering into God’s presence with music is a command from the Lord.

  4. “Here’s My Heart It’s Yours To Keep”

Recently, The Rock Music released a music video for one of our songs — “Here’s My Heart”. The message behind the song is quite simple, but truly life changing. When you get a moment, check it out.

Within the song, there is the prayer that God would take our hearts in their entirety. It may seem simple enough, but we all know how hard it can be to both offer (and allow) God to completely take our hearts. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, the world around us fights for our affections. Perhaps it’s our job, our money, or glory? Maybe even “good” things, like our family or church can wrestle for our attention and worship?

  5. Run to the Lord First

Run to the Lord First, a Word by Pastor Steele Croswhite of The Rock Church, a non-denominational christian church, in Salt Lake City Draper Utah

“In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me,’Flee like a bird to your mountain?'” — Psalm 11:1

I really love this verse. The reason I love it is because it is a reminder that we, as Christians, are to be vigilant to run to the Lord, first. We are to be vigilant to find our joy in the Lord.

David was wrestling with some difficult life circumstances when he wrote this Psalm. When others were encouraging him to “flee to the mountain” to find rest, David reminded them that his rest was in the Lord. David was vigilant to turn to Jesus first, he was vigilant to find refuge and joy in Him.

  6. Open Our Eyes

Open Our Eyes, A Word by Pastor Steele Croswhite of The Rock Christian Church Utah

Have you ever walked into church and been so distracted that you wondered why you even showed up? Or, maybe, you knew why you came, but by the time the worship music began you had lost focus? I sure have. The song Open Our Eyes (from the Your Love Remains album) was written as a prayer. It’s asking the Lord to “open our eyes to see Jesus” and combat these kinds of distractions.

While I’m at church, I wear a lot of different hats. Between being a pastor, a parent, a music director, and a friend, I can get distracted. By the time I open my mouth to sing, I can be more focused on what’s happening around me than what God wants to have happen within me. I can be caught off guard by a comment I wasn’t prepared for, distracted by music equipment, or preoccupied with my children. All the while, the songs are blowing right past me.

S.O.A.P. Devotional, a word by pastor steele croswhite of the rock church in utah

Lately, I have had a real boost in my quiet times and it’s because I have been using SOAP! No, not the soap you use to wash with. Rather, a devotional plan. Let me explain.

    S. – Scripture
    O. – Observation
    A. – Application
    P. – Prayer

I am not sure who thought up this acronym originally, but I am certain I have heard Bill Young use it before (thanks, Bill).

Here are a few examples out of my journal — showing you how this has worked in my quiet times this past week.

Give Thanks, A Word by Pastor Steele Croswhite from The Rock Church in Utah.

“He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me…” — Psalm 50:23 (NIV84)

I really love serving God. I mean it, my heart (through and through) longs to do more for Him. I love serving God’s people; I love playing music for Him, and I love knowing Him more and more. Each day I seek to bring honor to God by serving Him.
