Discovering God’s Presence in Missionary Life

Yesterday and today have been spent fine-tuning our plans for the mission trip. Our mission isn’t what Wednesday was — our first full day of the official mission. We met as a large group to map out the agenda, worship, and pray together. After that, kids 10 and under began the day with swimming.

The teenagers went out on a city trek to visit the Cathedral of St. Martin. We also took them to the top of the bell tower. Once there, you could see all of downtown Vrsar, as well as the many islands out in the Adriatic Sea. It was beautiful. Following that, Steele gave these missionary teens a quick teaching on Psalm 90. They listened with enthusiasm as Steele related this Psalm of Moses to their own lives.

Moses was born a Hebrew, raised as an Egyptian, and then fled to Midian. Years later, Moses was called to be a missionary of sorts, delivering his own people from slavery to freedom and a promised land of their own. They wandered forty years, only for Moses to catch a glimpse of his promised home. But he never got to live there.

How similar is the life of a missionary? The parallels are remarkable…moving from one home to another, perhaps never truly feeling at home. Maybe they never feel like they belong.  It is from this context that Moses proclaims, “Lord, through all the generations You have been our home” (Psalm 90:1). It is a startling truth for the missionaries, their kids, and, in a way, for us all.

The afternoon was spent rock climbing with the teens, while the younger kids enjoyed the beautiful weather, scenery, and playground.

Please continue to pray for excellent weather, bonding with the missionaries, and safety.
