  1. The Rule of Rehoboam

The Rule of Rehoboam — a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him"

“When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. … 5 Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Thus says the LORD, ‘You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.’” — 2 Chronicles 12:1,5

I recently read this story in 2 Chronicles 12:1-8. I encourage you to read the whole passage. In light of our King Jesus series, I thought there were some timely lessons from the rule of Rehoboam.

First, when King Rehoboam was strong, he abandoned God’s law. This is undoubtedly very instructive. As we are a strong, rich culture, this is naturally a real danger for us. Instead, we must cultivate a thankful heart in our family, church, and community.

Next, Rehoboam abandoned God, and it says the whole nation with him. A nation indeed follows its leaders. For this reason, we need to see the importance of praying and voting for good leadership.

    There Are Consequences

Then, there are always consequences of being unfaithful to God. That is tragically evident in this passage. In this case, Egypt attacked Jerusalem after their unfaithfulness. Not because of Egypt’s military might but because the Israelites were unfaithful to the Lord.

What is more, the link between verses one and five is very striking. In verse one, Rehoboam abandoned God’s law. And then, in verse five, the prophet Shemaiah informs the king that he has abandoned God. That was certainly sobering to read. To abandon God’s law is to, in fact, abandon God Himself!

And finally, when the princes and king humbled themselves, God granted them deliverance. This is such an encouraging note to end on. If people humbly repent (and turn to God), He will absolutely be merciful. He instantly relents when the people repent. There is always hope because we follow a God who shows mercy and forgives!

  2. Stay Awake!

Stay Awake! – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "what is happening around you? Equally important, are you praying? And ultimately, are you prepared for His return? Stay awake, Church!"

“Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” — Matthew 24:42

You may have read a sad story in the news last week. A man shot at a woman, and the police then killed him (as of this writing, the details are still under investigation). But this happened a few miles from my house. Where this terrible story intersects my life (and your inbox) is that soon after the shooting, a police helicopter started circling the area and woke me up.

  3. Pocket Gopher and Proverbs

Pocket Gopher and Proverbs – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "But the gopher persisted. In the same way, God gives a variety of warnings when we are on a road that leads to destruction."

Last fall, I had a pocket gopher problem. This pest somehow got into my backyard and started tunneling everywhere. It created dozens of mounds around my garden. Then it started moving toward my trees, which could kill them! So I declared war on the gopher. After watching various YouTube videos, I tried flooding, poison, and traps. Unfortunately, none of it worked; the gopher kept digging. Fortunately, the YouTube algorithm suggested a video for a particularly effective trap. I ordered it, and the gopher was dead within five minutes of setting it.

I thought of my gopher problem when I read these verses in my quiet time last week:

“Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished.” — Proverbs 6:28-29

  4. Finding Rest

Finding Rest – a word by Pastor Caleb Yetton from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "All of these things keep us from finding rest on the ride. At times, we can fear that God Himself is asleep at the wheel."

One of the more frustrating things for me in life is not being able to fall asleep. I don’t often have trouble with this, but I have gone through spells of it. Sometimes, it happens when I first get in bed. Other times, it’s when I wake up in the middle of the night (and can’t fall back to sleep). Instead of finding rest, my mind races, thinking about all there is to worry about in life.

In the still of the night, it’s so easy to reflect on those things that scare us or give us anxiety. Or, perhaps we go through items on the to-do list that we missed that day. Health, relationships, finances, parenting, news of war, what does the future hold? Admittedly, it can all feel paralyzing.
